Birth of a Tune

I have that piece available now that documents how I wrote a new tune with the Music Editor in 2 hours 20 minutes: From Nothing To Something In 144 Minutes

Music Editor Progress

I've done some good work with the SongTrellis Music Editor for the Mac. I've gotten enough bugs fixed that I'm willing to do a public beta soon. I've spent a lot of time with the editor's MIDI reader. When it's available, you should be able to download a chord progression from The Changes and open it with the editor. When it opens, the application should do a good job of recognizing the chords in the progression and should label them properly. The progression will open in a score window that looks an awful lot like the GIF renderings of chord sequences that I've been linking into the site for the last two week. Once it's open in the app, you can loop a progression and practice with it, you can adjust the tempo, you can change the instrumentation, you can transpose it, you can compose with it, you can turn on note coloring and study it.

I changed the way chord symbols are displayed in scores. I adopted the chord nomenclature used in the New Real Book series by Chuck Sher. I also changed the display code so that the accidental and interval specifications in chord symbols are slightly superscripted.

Sheet music for progressions in GIF format

Speaking of GIF renderings, several members asked that we provide the sheet music for the MIDI files we post. We now have sheet music, rendered as GIF images, available for 150 of the 257 changes we currently list. Over the next month I'll create the other 100 images. If, for example, you look at the changes for A Ghost of a Chance there is a link at the end of the text that will take you to the GIF that displays the score for the chord progression.

You should find that the GIF appears in your browser. It should be sized so that you can print it directly from your browser on an 8.5x11 in. sheet of paper.
