Luke,

This is one of the most delightfully curious entries I've ever seen on the Trellis.  That's the good news and the better news is I may be able to pass on some helpful information relating to instrumentalists  vs  singers.

Nothing in your plaintive identifies specific music problems between you and your girlfriend so I will  stick to the basics and let you two sort things out.

First,   The human voice has a far more limited range than a mechanical instrument and when paired,  the intrument must be played in such a way as to accompany the vocalist.  The range of the singer dictates the general key in which a tune can sucessfully happen..  not the other way around !    As the guitarist in your duets,   you must determine her vocal range and adjust the keys of your guitar arrangements accordingly.

None other than the great Bernard Chinn sent me some broad rules of thumb regarding  composig or playing for  vocal ranges.    For women vocalists,  an  Eb to Ab range is your best bet.

Men's singing pipes tend to like notes a forth or fifth lower so if you play your tunes in a key that YOU  find easy to sing,   play them up the neck a ways and see if your girlfriend is a bit happier..   Given that  Eb is one of the most rotten root keys for guitar,  ( guess how I know. ) ... try transposing all all your  E 's  to  A's ,  your  G's to C's,  yoour  A's  to D's ..  etc..etc..etc... I think you get the message.

Luke,  let us know how things work out at the wedding  and please never forget !!.... when you ask a singer to sing a tune of  YOUR  choosing,    it automatically becomes  YOUR  responsibilty to adjust your play and key to the abilties of the lead ....  singer's voices are the leads .. OK ?

Good luck and please check in when you can,  Chas
