Blues Tunes link

Check out the link on the left which takes you to a list of all of the blues tunes currently listed on SongTrellis. It includes great work by Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Wayne Shorter and others.

Our puzzle is to figure out why all of those varied compositions are blues. You can tell by listening to the harmony alone. What is the essential sound?
