Some very nice things have been happening in the Song Discussions this past week. Sid Thomas signed on as a member and showed us a neat set of chord substitutions that can be used at the beginning of I Thought About You and other tunes.

Brent Pym mentioned that he wanted to know about the key changes for Coltrane's "Giant Steps". Joe Jagelka responded almost instantly with a succinct rule for keeping track of the key changes in the tune.

Since SongTrellis visitors are constantly checking out the Giant Steps changes, I thought it would be fun and useful to do a harmonic analysis of the changes down to the finest detail. I finished that in the wee hours this morning.  The analysis shows each of the 10 key changes Coltrane makes during the 16 bar form of the tune. For each key change you can see the notation of the chords involved and can listen to a link that lets you hear those chords. If you listen to the links in order you can hear how the progression is built, piece by piece.

Joe Jagelka contributed two originals this weekend: Debbie Called and We Know Where You're Hiding
