It's frustrating sometimes to look at the log for the SongTrellis site. I could see that sometime yesterday a visitor to the site was looking for the chords of My One And Only Love, a tune that I hadn't listed yet. It was apparently an accident that they were routed to SongTrellis. The Google search they tried matched the "My" in My Shining Hour, one from One Finger Snap, "Only" from It's Only A Paper Moon, and "Love" from You Don't Know What Love Is.

As soon as I saw the entry, I knew that I could easily do an arrangement for it. I have my copy of the Real Book with me. The progression is interesting and worth studying. John Coltrane had done a definitive version when he accompanied Johnny Hartman back in the early 60s. I had it out on the site with a MIDI file and a score in a half an hour.

The frustrating part is that I now have My One And Only Love available. It will be there when the next person checks for it after the two new pages are indexed by the search engines in a week or two. But I don't have a way to track down the person who was looking for the tune. The person who visited wasn't a member of the site, so I just have an IP address in the logs.

If the person was a member, I would see their email ID with the request. Then I could send them mail, when I was able to satisfy their request.

Interestingly, in my server logs I can see the full text of server requests that are referred to my site from external search engines, but the text of searches that are made via SongTrellis's Search link are not logged by my server software. If I can figure out how to get internal searches logged, there would be an easy and reliable way for visitors to tell me what they'd like to find. They would not even have to send email. I'd see it in the logs and act on their request if I could.

It's also too bad that there is no current way for websites to subscribe to search services to find out what kinds of requests users make in the area that their site is competent to satisfy. For instance, I would love to be able to see requests from Google or another major search engine that include the words "chords" or "rhythms" but do not match my site. It would be amazingly effective intelligence. In my case it would tell me exactly what we should work on next. It's blasphemy to say this on the Web, but I'd pay hard cash for it.
